Vivan Sundaram, born 1943. Studied painting in Baroda and London at the Slade School of Art, Since 1990 he has made sculpture, installation, photography and video.
Has had two retrospectives: Step inside and you are no longer a stranger, fifty years, 2018, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi and Disjunctures, Haus der Kunst, Munich. invited by the Director, the late Okwui Enwezor,

Has made installations named Memorial 1993, History Project, Victoria Memorial, Calcutta1998 and Sher-Gil Archive. In Re-take of Amrita, 1991-92 digital photographs.
Exhibitions Gagawaka, 2011 and Post Mortem 2013-14 crossed over into fashion performance .409 Ramkinkar’s, 2015 was a collaboration with theatre directors. An installation Insurrection 1946: Meanings of Failed Action, in collaboration Ashish Rajadhyaksha, 2017, a sound work with David Chapman
He has exhibited in the Biennale’s of Sydney, Sharjah, Shanghai, Havana, Johannesburg, Kwangju, Berlin


Started Kasauli Art Centre, 1976-1990. Now called Kasauli Art Project, under the Sher-Gil Sundaram Arts Foundation set up 2016 by him and his sister Navina Sundaram. In 2016 set up the Umrao Singh Sher-Gil annual grant for photography.

He has edited a two-volume book Amrita Sher-Gil: Letters and Writings, 2010
As an artist activist is a founder member of SAHMAT as well as the Journal of Arts & Ideas.
